That’s Not My Gracen Photo Book

It had been a while since I had made Gracen a photo book, so a couple of weeks ago, I selected some photos (the hardest part when you have as many as I do) to make her a knock-off version of the Usborne That’s Not My….  books. If you haven’t come across these books yet, you should really check them out.  They’re short, simple stories with strong repetition, touch and feel parts, and bold, colourful illustrations.

I actually first fell in love with them when my friend and teaching partner at the time was selling Usborne and read one aloud at a book party.  It was probably the best read aloud I’ve listened to before in my life.  Since moving to Vancouver, we started signing them out from our local libraries, and they’ve quickly become family favourites.

Here are some pages from the version I whipped up for Miss G…  (Please forgive my made up words in advance. ☺)

The best part is that these books are super easy to put together, can be added to at any time, and can easily be reprinted if needed.  Not to mention that they put some of those photos just sitting on the computer to good use too!

Gracen’s Favourite “Game”

I swear Grae could do this all day long everyday.  A cozy spot + a good book + someone to ask questions  = one very content little lady.

An Afternoon Downtown

There’s something wonderful about downtown Vancouver on a sunshiny day.  The crowds seem more laid-back, the people are friendlier, and the sidewalks are lined with performers, artists, and vendors, making it perfectly okay to saunter along leisurely.  So, with yet another gorgeous Vancouver day upon us, Gracen and I packed up our stroller, jumped on the Canada Line, and made our way downtown.  Despite Grae’s surprisely long 3 hour nap, we were lucky enough to make it in time to spend most of Bradley’s lunch hour with him.  We walked along the sidewalks, sat on the art gallery steps, watched an amazing percussion group, and visited Grae’s favourite place – the kids’ section of Chapters.IMG 0264

Lazy Sunday Morning

We had a wonderfully lazy morning today.  We meant to get out of the house, but it simply didn’t happen.  Instead, this did:

Animal Admirer

Gracen loves being read to, but more than anything these days, she wants to be asked to point out certain things while flipping through books.  Mix that with the fact that she’s completely and totally obsessed with animals, and there’s really no reading books about animals.  This is what happens instead.

And she could go on and on and on…

“Manmaw” Charlotte Visits

IMG 6440Grandma Charlotte was in town this weekend doing some professional development and visiting a friend, so we got to spend afternoon with her today.  Gracen kept her busy with colouring projects and countless storybook requests.  Grandmas don’t need rest, do they?

Book Mountain

IMG 5770Between talking and signing, Grae is a pretty awesome little communicator.  But in instances like these, I wish she could tell me more.  We were at home playing when she stopped, went to her room, got her fuzzy blanket, and laid it out on the floor just so.  Then one-by-one, she started transferring her books from the baskets in the living room onto the blanket.  She ensured that each book was fully on the blanket, and if one accidentally slid off a little bit, she’d go back and place it back on the pile until it stayed exactly where she wanted it.  When the baskets in the living room were empty, she started retrieving more from the bookshelf in her room.  By the end of it all, we had a mountain of books (and Sharpies) on a blanket in the middle of our house.  What started this mission, I’m not sure…

Family & Friends

IMG 4814Gracen adores the little family and friends photo album she got in her stocking while we were up in the Okanagan.  I’m fairly certain we’ve “read” it at least 5 times a day each day since she got it.  She carefully points to each person’s face and either tells me the person’s name or waits for me to tell it to her.

IMG 4816“Manmaw” (Grandma) and “Ee-Doh” (Gido) are easy peasy.

IMG 4820Grandpa Dave still gets called “Ee-Doh” most of the time, but we’re working on fixing that.

IMG 4832Inevitably, someone in the book is always “pretty, pretty, pretty”.  Today Grae ran her little finger over Auntie Rozi’s hair several times and announced, “pretty, pretty, pretty”.  I asked her, “Grae, do you think Auntie Rozi is pretty?” and with big eyes, she gave me the biggest, most serious nod ever.  Aw, Auntie Rozi – Grae thinks you’re pretty!

Here are a few of the other pages in Miss G’s book:
